It was announced in 2006 that Bill Gates had plans to go part-time as a board chairman so that he could spend more of his time guiding his global health charity, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Consequently, this Friday marks the last day of his full-time tenure as the leader of the software giant though he will still be the chairman and largest shareholder of Microsoft.

The software company, on the other hand, was left behind still struggling to adjust and face hard problems even Gates could not resolve. Among these problems is the company’s battle against Google Inc. which remains the top search engine on the web. The next steps will be up to his successors to overcome these critical competitive headaches or just watch Microsoft’s leadership and wealth in the industry gradually erode.
